Our Architectural Design Process

Mark Fairhurst Architects is an award wining RIBA registered Chartered Practice and ARB certified architects offering a comprehensive range of architectural services. Key to our success is the understanding of our client’s aspirations and requirements. This is achieved though clear and regular communication with our client at all stages of the architectural design process. We provide a thorough analysis at the outset to help inform us and ensure the full potential of the project is achieved. We use a range of presentational techniques to assist the architectural design process with hand sketches, drawings, modelling, 3D CAD modelling, CAD production drawing and CGI presentation images. Accurate modelling enables the impact of the proposed built form to be properly assessed in terms of function, programme, circulation, sunlight and daylight, context and aesthetics. This enables us to explain both design concepts and details helping visualise the projects for clients, local authorities, public consultations, design team coordination and contractors.

Design Team

We have established relationships with a wide range of construction professionals suitable for all sizes of projects enabling the most appropriate design team is assembled for each project. We offer advise on structural engineers, services engineers, environmental and sustainability consultants, land surveyors, cost consultants, party wall surveyors, Health & Safety Advisors and other specialists as required.

Design Approach

Our design approach is based on an extensive understanding of the built environment including modern and traditional building techniques. We continually work with leading manufacturing companies and professional building organisations based in the UK, Europe and beyond to ensure the highest quality is achieved with the design specification for the building.

We take the majority of our architecture projects through to construction and, as such, have a wealth of experience in dealing with the tendering process, negotiating with contractors and advising on contractual relationships. We recommend regular site visits to monitor the progress of the works, checking on quality and progress and assisting in valuations ensuring the established budgets for the projects are adhered to. We have high expectations of the contractor and also a respect for their knowledge and experience and will work with them to ensure design issues encountered on site are sensibly resolved, maintaining the quality of the construction. Our consistent design approach carried on throughout all stages of the architectural design process ensures the successful realisation of the building and its longevity for the future.

Extensions and refurbishments provide different opportunities to add value by creative, sensitive interventions and home improvements. We can assist in achieving your goals to improve your home environment and have experience in dealing with small and large scale projects. Mark Fairhurst Architects has provided expert advice for a number of years on behalf of RIBA at Grand Design Live; and also contributed and consulted on behalf of Shelter’s Architect in the House. Our in depth knowledge of specialist domestic suppliers gives our clients a choice of high quality building products at competitive prices including: furniture, kitchens, sanitary wear, flooring and lighting.

Home Design

Initial complementary consultations with us allow assessment of the scope of the work and estimation of the fees for the project. Services for domestic projects typically follow the following stages:

  • Feasibility Study: We assess the existing site and buildings and make initial proposals based on the client requirements.
  • Outline & Scheme Design: We develop the design following consultation with the client, planning authority and present design proposals suitable for planning and freeholder applications.
  • Detailed Design: We provide detailed design and production information suitable for Building Control Applications and Tender use.
  • Tendering: We can assist with advice on building contracts and provide written scopes of work to allow accurate tendering of projects to builders ensuring competitively priced work.
  • On Site Monitoring / Contract Administration: Regular site visits can be provided during the works and valuations of the works can be carried out to ensure payments are made prudently.
