Taylor Wimpey Project 2020

The design competition called for an innovative design for a housing typology to shape and future proof the Taylor Wimpey design range for 2020 and beyond. We entered the first stage design competition in summer 2016 with a design for a 3 bed 5 person, 2 storey Home which can be adapted to different contexts including detached house, semi-detached house or terrace housing.

Following a serious of design studies, we refined the proposal to a contemporary, low maintenance, energy efficient and flexible ‘future proof’ solution to suit the aspirations of the developers, builders and future purchasers.

The geometry of the house allows flexibility of width/proportion, cladding materials and roof forms to allow variations in the appearance of multiple houses suitable for a large scale housing development where a variety of house types are required.

The living space is full width providing the largest room in the house with generous bi-folding doors to the rear garden, the connection with the dining and kitchen creates a flexible living space which can be easily sub-divided to suit different potential users. The direct relationship with the living space allows the rear garden to be well viewed and accessed from the house allowing a potential terrace area to relate both to the garden and the living room expanding the feeling of usable space ideal for barbeques and entertaining.

The first floor stair landing and circulation space is exposed to the double height light wells flanking at either side to eliminate the conventional enclosed dark corridor, this ‘unique selling point’ provides a seamless living space connecting all habitable rooms transforming a traditionally secondary space into the primary asset of the home.
