Returning Home to Clapham: A Clapham Home Renovation
Introduction
This Clapham home renovation was designed for a client returning to London after 10 years abroad. However, the property had been rented and required refurbishment. In addition, the growing family needed more space.
Therefore, the design reimagines the house into a modern and functional home while retaining its original character.
Clapham Home Renovation in a Conservation Area
This Clapham home renovation forms part of a wider development by Mark Fairhurst Architects. Originally, the site included the conversion of a listed Georgian building into flats. In addition, four townhouses were constructed to the rear within the Clapham Road Conservation Area.
The house spans three storeys and includes a windowless basement. Notably, full-width bow windows define the exterior.
Inside, curved stair walls and a double-height living space create a strong architectural identity. As a result, these features were carefully preserved.

Design Approach for the Clapham Home Renovation
The key challenge of this Clapham home renovation was to improve space and light without losing the original design quality.
Therefore, the design introduces subtle yet effective changes. Each intervention integrates with the existing architecture while improving everyday living.

Reconfiguring Space and Light
A new front lightwell transforms the basement in this Clapham home renovation. It introduces natural light and ventilation into a new master bedroom suite with a dressing area and ensuite.
Meanwhile, the utility room was relocated. As a result, the kitchen became larger and more functional.
In addition, the WC was repositioned. This change allows for more counter space, larger appliances, and a wine cooler. A breakfast bar also creates a social connection to the garden.
Indoor-Outdoor Living in the Clapham Home Renovation
A glass bridge connects the home to a paved terrace overlooking the courtyard. Privacy screens ensure separation from neighbouring properties.
Below, a basement terrace includes seating and planting. Consequently, this space enhances both comfort and usability.
Sustainability and Future-Ready Living
As part of this clapham home renovation, sustainability was carefully considered to future-proof the property. Electric vehicle charging was incorporated to support low-emission transport, while a whole house ventilation system with heat recovery improves indoor air quality and energy efficiency. In addition, underfloor heating was introduced to provide consistent, low-energy warmth throughout the home.
Together, these measures reduce the home’s environmental impact while enhancing comfort and long-term performance

Interior Improvements
At the mezzanine level, the staircase lobby was removed. As a result, the living space feels open and connected.
Furthermore, the upper-floor bedrooms and bathrooms were refurbished. The front balcony was also improved.
Conclusion: A Successful Clapham Home Renovation
This Clapham home renovation delivers a carefully balanced design. It respects the original architecture while meeting modern family needs.
Ultimately, the project allowed the family to return home without relocating.
