Sustainable Homes: Our Approach to Urban Renewal

The sustainable homes project will replace a 1970s office building that has a neutral visual impact on the conservation area. Since the site is in a mostly residential street, the new homes will improve the neighbourhood while also meeting modern sustainability standards.

A Whole Lifecycle Carbon Assessment evaluated structural alternatives. The study found that retaining the existing structure posed significant challenges, including temporary works, reduced headroom, and accessibility issues, with minimal carbon benefits. Therefore, the team selected a timber frame for its superior carbon savings. Additionally, a Pre-Demolition Audit sets a target of 95% waste diversion from landfill, prioritising recycling and material reuse.

Innovative & Energy-Conscious Design

Each house will feature energy-efficient technologies. These include air source heat pumps, solar panels, green roofs, and a whole-house ventilation system. These elements will reduce energy use and environmental impact.

The sustainable homes will have six floors, including a new basement. Lightwells will bring natural light and air to two of the homes. The upper floors will have spacious living areas with winter gardens and terraces. The third house will have a private garden and a single-storey extension for ground-level living.

Architectural Harmony & Contextual Sensitivity

The design uses a zinc-clad mansard roof and full-height windows with timber vents. The pale-yellow brick facade fits well with the surrounding buildings. The project blends well with nearby homes, including six award-winning houses by MFA for Q Developments.

Mark Fairhurst Architects aim to create modern, sustainable homes that respect the area’s history. By using eco-friendly materials and technologies, these houses will offer high-quality, future-proof family living in Westminster.
